Over 1,000 Tasmanians have signed a Unions Tasmania petition calling on the Hodgman Liberal Government to fund the completion of the Workers Memorial Park in Launceston.
The Park, which opened in 2011 following the work of a small but dedicated committee, has never been completed to its original design.
Unions Tasmania urged the Liberal Government to fund the Park during last years budget consultations but this call was ignored. Guy Hudson, whose son Matthew died at work, has been a tireless campaigner for funding for the Park.
With written submissions from the community to the 2020-2021 Budget closing this Friday the 6th of December, Unions Tasmania will again make a submission to the Government to prioritise the Park.
Every worker deserves to come home from safe from work. But too many Tasmanian workers get injured on the job or worse they never make it home. This Park is an important place where families, workmates and friends of those killed at work can go to remember their loved ones. It would also serve as a permanent reminder to the community of the deadly consequences when workplaces dont put safety first, said Jessica Munday, Unions Tasmania Secretary.
The Government has an opportunity when the May Budget comes around to finally announce funding for the Park. It would mean a lot to families whose loved ones never made it home, said Ms Munday.
