Tasmanian unions are launching a new campaign today in the fight against the Rockliff Liberal Government’s plans to slash Tasmanian public sector jobs and sell off the state’s publicly owned assets.
The Stop the Sell Off, Stop the Cuts campaign will bring together workers and community members from across Tasmania to stand up for public sector jobs, Government Business Enterprises (GBEs) and State-owned Corporations (SOCs) that the Government is trying to sell.
“Premier Rockliff has launched an extraordinary attack on Tasmania’s public service jobs and public assets,” said Unions Tasmania Secretary, Jessica Munday.
“The Liberals have a plan to sell everything from the buses at Metro to the poles and wires owned by TasNetworks on the private market. On top of this, they’ve put up to 2,500 Tasmanian public sector workers in the firing line, refusing to say who will still have a job and who will get the sack.”
“Community opposition to the Premier’s mass privatisation and job cuts plan is overwhelming. Tasmanians know that privatisation doesn’t work, and that our public services are already stretched to the limit. We are urging Tasmanians to get behind this campaign. Now is the time for us to send a strong message to the Liberal Government – you have no mandate for these privatisations and these cuts, and you must back down,” said Ms Munday.
Community members will be asked to contact the Premier and other Liberal Party members demanding they dump their privatisations and job cuts plans.
